An ocean of noise

Just because it could be worse...

...doesn't mean it's not bad. If you're not obsessed by the same things I am you might have missed the recent, informal, investigation by the FCC into Apple rejecting the Google Voice iPhone application from the App Store. There are plenty of theories as to why this occurred and plenty of prior lamentations about the opacity and obsequiousness of the App Store review process, and then today I read this. It suddenly occurred to me that it is quite possible that any engineer working inside Apple is subjected to many times more scrutiny for tiny portions of the applications they create and they probably consider the App Store approval process a breeze. Imagine you're an Apple Engineer and you have to present to the man who decides whether your pet project lives or dies, and who once purportedly told a previous engineer, "You've baked a really lovely cake, but then you've used dog shit for frosting." I think Apple Engineers might laugh that the only thing that happens to some apps is they get rejected and sent back to the drawing board for icons that are too similar. Don't get me wrong, I think the App Store approval process is ludicrous. However, App Store reviewers do have to sort through 80 apps per reviewer a day, while constantly remembering WWSJD?
